A VISUAL COVERS ALBUM
Alongside her career as a musician, Sarah Gillespie has exhibited in the USA & UK, & received commissions from private buyers & fans. Her new collection, Tango Palace, described as a 'visual covers album', is a series of works inspired by specific pieces of music ranging from Tom Waits & Miles Davis to her fellow band mate: ECM composer Kit Downes. All works are mixed medium and based on the classic 12x12in vinyl album cover dimensions. They are mounted in black recycled wooden frames.
As a songwriter, I usually find it more comfortable to compose songs than cover them. But I still have that impulse to interpret other artist's music. Sometimes I do it musically, but more often I’m compelled to paint while listening to the songs and music that I love. It helps me to cope with the sensation of not being able to contain my enthusiasm. It is a sort of cathartic homage.
Sarah Gillespie was due to exhibit the new collection at the Chelsea's iconic 606 Club from May 14th. The pieces are currently for sale online with 20% donated to the 606 Club.
606 Club is very close to my heart. I used to work in the office many years ago before my first record came out & Steve Rubie gave me some of my first gigs. I hope that revenue from the sale of these paintings might go some way towards keeping the club afloat after the devastating impact of Covid 19.
